AdrianWarren.com: Reviews: Canon EOS 400D

Viewfinder

The EOS 400D is fitted with the same penta-mirror based viewfinder as its predecessor; the only significant difference comes from the new AF subsystem, which means there are now nine AF-points instead of seven. Otherwise the specification remains unchanged; coverage 95%, magnification 0.8x, eyepoint 21mm, dioptre correction -3 to +1.

Battery Compartment

The battery compartment of the EOS 400D is on the right hand side, beneath the hand grip. The latched door can be removed to attach the optional BG-E3 battery grip. There's also a small rubber flap to allow connection of the optional AC adapter kit.

Inside the main battery compartment there's also a small slot for a disposable lithium CR2016 battery, which is used to backup the date and time settings

Battery Charger

As with the previous model the 400D uses a proprietary (720mAh) NB-2LH Li-ion battery, and is supplied with a charger. The review sample, CB-2LWE pictured here, is an international (i.e. 100V-240V 50/60Hz) charger. The charger is relatively small, lightweight and features a two-colour LED which is red when charging and turns green when the battery is fully charged. A full charge takes around two hours.

CompactFlash Compartment

The CompactFlash slot is concealed behind a door on the right hand (hand grip) side of the camera; to gain access you need to slide the door backwards, and then door opens outwards. As with previous models, opening the door shuts the camera down instantly.

Connections

Finally, on the left hand side there's a small rubber panel which conceals three ports. At the top is the video out port, a 3.5mm mono jack which produces composite video in either PAL or NTSC, (the format can be selected via the menu system). In the middle, there's a 2.5mm stereo jack socket for a remote release (optional RS-60E3 ). The final socket is a USB 2.0 port, which uses a standard USB mini-B style connector.
